This article explores the nomination system and candidate selection procedures of political parties and then examines voters’ perceptions of political parties’ primaries in the 8th local election. According to the empirical analysis, first, voters evaluated the People Power Party more positively than the Minjoo Party, recognized morality as the most important factor, and preferred open primaries in the process of selecting candidates. Second, in terms of political representation and attitudes toward the quota system on political minorities, voters agreed on the necessity of the youth nomination quota system, while the female nomination quota system maintained a negative position except for women. Finally, voters’ satisfaction with the candidate selection procedures mostly relies on their partisanship. These findings provide important implications for the necessary conditions and right directions to revitalize grassroots democracy.
